 18世纪中期，北美殖民地深陷精神与社会危机，牧师乔治·怀特菲尔德开启巡回布道，以充满力量的言辞点燃民众的信仰热情，掀起席卷殖民地的第一次大觉醒运动。本杰明·富兰克林被怀特菲尔德的布道吸引，主动为其印刷布道词，两人结下深厚友谊。富兰克林在交往中逐渐关注民众的精神觉醒，怀特菲尔德的布道也悄然影响着殖民地民众对自由的认知，两人的互动与合作，正改变着北美殖民地的精神面貌。
