Jack (48), has been married to Maggie (48), for over half his life. He works as a hand raker on the mussel beds in North Wales alongside his younger brother, Dyfan (43) and Dyfan's three sons. Jack has always assumed that his own boy, Tom (15), will join the family business on leaving school but Tom's disclosure that he has no desire to follow in his father's footsteps creates familial tension. Tensions are intensified by the arrival of an itinerant skipper, Daniel (30), who makes known his feelings for Jack. In this remote, rural community where life revolves around Church and fishery, Jack is faced with an impossible dilemma. On The Sea is a beautiful, sensual and at times, tragic exploration of masculinity, place and desire.
Elliot is staying with her ex’s new girlfriend while attending a medical trial for her recent, unexplained loss of hearing. As she reconfigures her relationship with her (sonic) environment and herself, an intimate connection sparks between the two women. With captivating performances by Victoria Pedretti and Maya Hawke, this loose adaptation of director Eliza Barry Callahan’s semi-autobiographical novel The Hearing Test captures the uneasy process of letting go and embracing change with sensitive warmth.
